She was letting the water trickle out from her cupped hands. Focusing on the steady trickle was soothing her as much as washing her face with the cool water had.

The sight of another person immediately behind her in the mirror made her jump with a shriek.

“Oh, crap, Leah, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

She braced her hands against the sink, taking steady breaths. “Shannon, hey,” Leah said, forcing a smile. “No worries. I was just distracted.”

Shannon returned her smile.. “Hey, how are you doing with everything?”

“Doing okay. The farm is more challenging than I initially anticipated, but I think it’s really coming together. Liam and Byron have been a really huge help. I wouldn’t have made anywhere near this progress without them, plus all of the help that Byron scrounged up.”

Shannon bit her lip. “About Liam,” she said slowly, “I hope you don’t think I’m overstepping, and I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but I’m concerned.”

Leah snagged a towel to dry her hands. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Well, it’s just that… He didn’t have the best upbringing.” Gesturing at Leah, she added, “Which you know already, of course. It’s just. You know that a boy pulling your pigtails isn’t an appropriate way to tell you that he likes you, right?”

“Um…” What? Her brain was filled with white noise. She was not expecting Shannon to go there. Shaking her head, she forced herself to say something, anything.

“Uh, yeah. I know, and that’s really not what this is. He’s making it up to me. And he definitely didn’t post that to get my attention. Besides, it’s not like it costs me anything to give him a chance to make up for it. Whatever he was thinking, he’s working on making it right. And it’s not like I did nothing.”

Shannon smiled tightly. “Just be careful, dear. The Devlin boys have always been a lot, and I don’t want to see you get burned again.”

“Right.” Shannon was trying to be helpful. She did not deserve Leah’s irritation. Or, more likely, she was simply being nosy and looking for gossip. Her motivation was beside the point. She was not going to snap at her.

“Thanks for your concern, Shannon. We’ve simply agreed to bury the hatchet. It’s not like we’re dating again.”

“Of course,” she responded. She gave Leah a motherly smile, setting Leah’s teeth on edge. She had a mother. One who had enough opinions about Leah’s life. She didn’t need more input.

Fortunately, a group of women came in, affording Leah the opportunity to wave and smile before ducking out and losing Shannon in the crowd.
